PADDOCKWOOD, Saskatchewan -- The goal of the Boreal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (BOREAS) was to study to the boreal forests of northern Canada and their interactions with climate and biogeochemical cycles along a transect from the southern ecotone (boundary) with the North American prairie to the northern ecotone with the Arctic tundra.

A Southern Study Area (SSA) was established in the area surrounding Prince Albert National Park. The ecotone was often abrupt, with the vegetation switching almost instantaneously between prairie and boreal forest.

I began my work on the BOREAS project here. I arrived the night of July 12, arranging to camp on the grounds of a school used as a lab site for SSA researchers. I spent the next day getting oriented, then began field work on July 14. I wrapped up my work there on the 24th and left the next day to look at some auxiliary sites the vicinity of Pelican Narrows, a First Nations reservation in northeastern Saskatchewan. I then headed on to the Northern Study Area (NSA) near Thompson, Manitoba.

NOTE ON THE MAP PROJECTION: The map above were produced using a Conformal Conic projection, which shows the surface of the Earth as if projected onto a cone. Conic projections are commonly used for mapping small portions of the Earth's surface. I give praise to Charles Culberson's excellent Versamap program which allows me to produce the base maps. They were shaded and annotated using Adobe Illustrator.
