Pond succession

ABOARD THE CANADIAN NATIONAL, Manitoba (28 July 1994) -- Because the most recent glaciation destroyed drainage systems in nothern latitudes, wetlands are common in formerly glaciated areas. Many of these wetlands are ephemeral. This pond in the background is slowly filling in. First with mosses and other low-growing vegetation, as in the foreground, which will ultimately be replaced by trees.
