Ecotone

CHURCHILL, Manitoba (30 July 1994) -- On my second (and last) day in Churchill, I set off for a distant area, Christmas Lake Esker, several miles to the east of the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. I was alone, and constantly watching for bear!

This is a good example of the ecotone between boreal forest and tundra, with alternating patches of both. Ponds and wetlands, such as in the background, are common because of the effect of the most recent glaciation on the area's drainage network.
