BLANCA MASSIF AREA, Colorado -- The Blanca Massif had been a high, unbroken plateau, but during the Ice Ages a glacier that carved out the Huerfano Valley gouged a nearly 4,000-foot deep gorge through the rock. This photo, taken from a lateral moraine along the western ridge of the massif, shows the east ridge of the valley and includes some of the scars of the glacial action.
