HAWAI'I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Hawai'i -- Halemaumau, the crater at the top center of the image, is impressive, but it lies in the even more spectacular Kilauea Caldera. The drop from the rim of the caldera to the bottom is huge. The view is from a picnic area on the north rim of the the caldera, which is surrounded by Chain of Craters Road. I had trouble getting the exposure right on this day. I think I took some better photos of it, but those were on the roll inside the stolen camera.
